Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.

May it be done to me according to your word.”

Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint Luke 1:26-38.

In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.
And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”
But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.
Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply, “The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her.

Commentary of the day

Saint Clare

(1193-1252),

Franciscan nun

3rd Letter to Agnes of Prague, 18-26 (©2006 The province of St. Mary of the Capuchin Order)

The dwelling place of God

May you cling to his most sweet mother who gave birth to a Son whom the heavens could not contain, and yet she carried him in the little cloister of her holy womb and held him on her virginal lap.

Who would not dread the treacheries of the enemy of humanity who, through the arrogance of momentary and deceptive glories, attempts to reduce to nothing that which is greater than heaven itself? Indeed, it is now clear that the soul of a faithful person, the most worthy of creatures because of the grace of God, is greater than heaven itself since the heavens and the rest of creation cannot contain their Creator. Only a faithful soul is his dwelling place and throne, and this only through the charity that the wicked lack. The Truth says: “Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I shall love him, and we shall come to him and make our dwelling place with him” (Jn 14:21.23).

Just as the glorious virgin of virgins physically carried him, so you, too, by following in her footsteps, can, without any doubt, always carry him spiritually in your chaste and virginal body, holding him by whom you and all things are held together, possessing that which, in comparison with the other transitory possessions of this world, you will possess more securely.

The Annunciation of the Lord

– Solemnity

LIPPI_Fra_Filippo_Annunciation 1

THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE LORD
Solemnity

In Jesus, God recapitulates all of his history of salvation on behalf of men and the Annunciation heralds the beginning of our salvation.
By Mary’s obedient “Fiat,” the earth has become heaven. “In Jesus, God has placed, in the midst of barren, despairing mankind,a new beginning which is not a product of human history but a gift from above” (Pope Benedict XVI).
“Thus, giving her consent to God’s word, Mary becomes the mother of Jesus. Espousing the divine will for salvation wholeheartedly, without a single sin to restrain her, she gave herself entirely to the person and to the work of her Son; she did so in order to serve the mystery of redemption with him and dependent on him, by God’s grace.”

   (Catechism of the Catholic Church)

God our Father,
your Word became man and was born of the Virgin Mary.
May we become more like Jesus Christ,
whom we acknowledge as our redeemer, God and man.
We ask this through our Lourd Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
